Mixed Americano: Padel Tournaments with Mixed Pairs
How Mixed Americano works: rotating partners with one woman and one man on every team. Rules, scoring options, ideal player counts and fairness tips.
Mixed Americano is the mixed-doubles take on classic Americano. Your partner changes every round, but every team is always one woman and one man. It's social, balanced, and a favourite for club nights.
What is Mixed Americano?
Scoring stays individual: every point your team wins is added to your own total. The difference is in the pairing. The draw puts one woman and one man on every team, so you can run a single overall ranking or announce separate winners for women and men.
The schedule is planned up front and doesn't depend on results, so everyone knows who they're playing with before the first round starts.
Rules, step by step
- Add players with their gender. For the cleanest schedule, have equal numbers of women and men.
- Set the number of courts. Four players, so two mixed teams, per court.
- Draw the schedule. Each team is one woman and one man, with repeat partners and opponents kept to a minimum.
- If there are extra players, they sit out that round.
- Play to a points total. A 24-point match might end 14–10.
- Enter the score. Both players on a team get their team's points.
- After the last round, the highest total wins (or name a women's and a men's winner).
Scoring options
- Points per match: 16, 21, 24, 32 or a custom value.
- Win bonus (optional): extra points for the players on the winning team.
- Draw bonus (optional): for matches that end level with an even target.
- Tie-breaks: points → wins → point difference → head-to-head → drawing lots.
Players and courts
The table assumes about 15–18 minutes per round (a 24-point match plus changeover).
| Players (W + M) | Courts | Sit-outs per round | Typical rounds in 90–120 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 (2 + 2) | 1 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 8 (4 + 4) | 2 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 12 (6 + 6) | 3 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 16 (8 + 8) | 4 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 16 (8 + 8) | 3 | 4 | 5–7 |
| 20 (10 + 10) | 5 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 24 (12 + 12) | 6 | 0 | 5–7 |
The easiest setup is four players per court with an even split of women and men. With 8 players (4 women, 4 men), every woman can partner every man once in 4 rounds; after that partners start repeating, while opponents keep changing.
Fairness notes
- Gender balance: if the numbers of women and men aren't equal, or the sit-outs tip the balance in a round, a same-gender team can occasionally appear. The draw works hard to avoid it, but it can't when the numbers don't allow it.
- Sit-out rotation: nobody sits out a second time before everyone has sat out once.
- Compensation (optional): a player who sits out can be credited with their own average points for that round.
- Repeats: the mixed-pair rule shrinks the pool of possible partners, so partner repeats start earlier than in regular Americano. The pre-start simulation shows them.
- Reproducible draw: the same seed always produces the same schedule.
Who it suits
- Club nights with both women and men
- Mixed-doubles socials, meetups and company events
- Organizers who want people to meet as many players as possible
If the numbers of women and men are far apart, classic Americano will be fairer. For a more competitive mixed evening, results-based Mexicano is another option. More tips in our Mixed Americano guide.

FAQ
Can we play with unequal numbers of women and men?
Yes, but some rounds may include a same-gender team. If the gap is large, we recommend classic Americano instead.
Are women and men ranked separately?
Points are individual, so you get one overall ranking. Many organizers hand out separate prizes for the top woman and the top man, which you can read straight from the standings.
What points target do you recommend?
For two hours, 24 points is a good start. For a shorter session, 16 or 21 points fits more rounds.
Do players need an account?
No. Players join with a QR code, short link or code by typing their name; no app download required.
