Team Americano: Americano with Fixed Partners
What is Team Americano? Fixed partners, new opponents every round. Rules, scoring options, pair and court counts and fairness notes for this padel format.
Team Americano is the fixed-partner version of Americano. You stay with the same partner from start to finish; only your opponents change. Each round you face a different pair, and points are counted per pair. It keeps the social feel of Americano for players who want to come with their own partner.
Team Americano is available in PadelDraw: create the tournament in the panel and pick the format. You form the pairs in the panel; "Pair in sign-up order" pairs players automatically in the order they joined, or you can add pairs manually.
What is Team Americano?
In classic Americano, partners change every round and the ranking is individual. In Team Americano, pairs are fixed and the ranking is per pair. Each round, pairs are matched against different opponents, with the goal of every pair playing as many different pairs as possible.
Note: some clubs use the name "Team Americano" for other variants too, such as two groups or clubs competing as teams while players rotate partners within their own side. This page covers the most common meaning: Americano with fixed pairs.
Rules, step by step
- Set the pairs. Each pair plays together for the whole event.
- Set the number of courts. Two pairs meet on each court.
- Match opponents for each round, keeping repeat match-ups to a minimum.
- If the pairs don't fit the courts, some pairs sit out that round.
- Play to a points total, for example 14–10 in a 24-point match.
- The pair's points go on the pair's total.
- After the last round, the pair with the most points wins.
Scoring options
Team Americano usually borrows Americano's options:
- Points per match: 16, 21, 24, 32 or a custom value.
- Win bonus: extra points for the winning pair.
- Draw bonus: for level results with an even target.
- Tie-breaks: total points, then wins, point difference and head-to-head is a common order.
Players and courts
The table assumes about 15–18 minutes per round (a 24-point match plus changeover). Two pairs, so four players, play on each court.
| Players (pairs) | Courts | Sit-outs per round | Typical rounds in 90–120 min |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 (4 pairs) | 2 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 10 (5 pairs) | 2 | 1 pair | 5–7 |
| 12 (6 pairs) | 3 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 16 (8 pairs) | 4 | 0 | 5–7 |
| 16 (8 pairs) | 3 | 2 pairs | 5–7 |
| 20 (10 pairs) | 5 | 0 | 5–7 |
When every pair plays every round, meeting every other pair once takes one round fewer than the number of pairs: 3 rounds for 4 pairs, 5 for 6 pairs, 7 for 8 pairs. That's essentially a round robin.
Fairness notes
- Sit-out rotation: with an odd number of pairs or too few courts, a fair rotation means no pair sits out twice before every pair has sat out once.
- Compensation: crediting a sitting pair with their average points keeps the standings balanced.
- Fixed-partner effect: the pair's level drives the ranking, so a strong pair has an edge from the start. If levels vary a lot, individual-scoring Americano makes for a more even evening.
- Repeat opponents: with few pairs and many rounds, meeting the same pair again is unavoidable.
Who it suits
- Players who come with a partner and want to stay together
- Club and company events that lean on team spirit
- Organizers who prefer a pair ranking to an individual one
For another fixed-pair setup, Round robin, where every pair plays every other pair once, and Swiss, which pairs teams on similar scores, are also available.

FAQ
How is Team Americano different from Americano?
In Americano you change partners every round and collect your own points. In Team Americano your partner is fixed and points are counted per pair; only opponents change.
Is Team Americano available in PadelDraw?
Yes. Create the tournament in the panel and pick Team Americano. Form the pairs automatically in sign-up order or add them manually. If you want fixed pairs matched by the standings, Team Mexicano is available too.
What happens with an odd number of pairs?
One pair sits out each round. In a fair rotation, nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once.
How many rounds should we play?
With 4 pairs, 3 rounds let every pair meet once. A two-hour evening fits 5–7 rounds, so some match-ups will repeat.
